Bill Harkers Reflections about Charlemonts Past
Our town of Charlemont, people don’t realize that the mines had at one time had 3000 people here in the town of Charlemont. We had the Hawke’s mine, we had the Davis mine, we had all these mines and all this stuff came into Charlemont. Got weighed, got on the freight cars over here. That’s all vanished.
Then we had an A&P, we had ice cream parlors, we had all kinds of stores, barber shops, we had meat markets, everything. Everybody feels that we’re so busy now but they didn’t really know how busy we were. We were busy bumper to bumper busy.
We had a fall season, we had the Foley season you couldn’t even move on the trail. The fishing season was booked, the ski season was booked, so we went from one season to another. It was very easy to make a living here and people could come here and you know and and do well.
